Electrolysis Celebrates 125 years of PERMANENT
Hair Removal in the year 2000!
Electrolysis was first performed in 1875 by opthamologist Charles Michel in the State of Missouri. Dr. Michel used a fine wire and battery to remove painful, ingrown eyelashes from a patient. Since that time, there have been vast improvements technologically; but the treatment process is still much the same. You can read more about the different modalities of electrolysis under How Electrolysis Works.
People have used temporary methods of hair removal for many years. There are assorted varieties of depilatories, pumice stones, razors, tweezers, waxes, bleaches and lasers. Today there is much talk about laser treatment for hair removal. What we know so far about lasers is that hyper-pigmentation (darkening of the skin) is a potential problem, that light hairs are usually unaffected by treatment, visits are extremely expensive, and that laser treatment is considered "long term" hair removal instead of "permanent" hair removal. The aforementioned choices are therefore considered temporary methods with electrolysis still being the only method of hair removal recognized as permanent by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
